It's hard to bet against Serena Williams! Now, that's what everyone says, and it is true.
Last night's second round match was nothing short of epic. It will be etched forever into the annals of tennis history...
It's hard to say goodbye to a woman with such a longevity and who's been on top of the tennis world in every category imaginable.
In 1999, I was at the Arthur Ashe stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York. Being a business traveler had its perks. The concierge at the hotel where I stayed told me she had an extra ticket for the U.S Open. I purchased that ticket.
The next day, after work, I went to Grand Central Station and took the Number 7 train to Flushing, in Queens, NY.
Back in the days, this engineer traveled with his Minolta 35 mm film camera. Standard equipment in those days, were a 35-42 mm wide angle for close-ups and a 100 to 400 mm zoom lens for long distance camera shots. I took copious notes and had plans that maybe one day I could write a book about my travels.
In 1999, Serena Williams was making her debut. Serena's tennis duel served as a backdrop to the main event, an Andre Agassi match. Her appearance, long white beads, the yellow and white trim outfit are now part of tennis fashion history.
Against the crowd's wishes, she dispatched her opponent that night and went on to win the 1999 US Open title. Since that time, I started to follow Serena's tennis career. I notice nowadays, the crowd no longer shout "Miss!!" at every one of her shots.
Instead, last night, I watched a 360-degree reversal. The crowd was applauding for Serena. I was pleased to see that, and she won the match. That was icing on the cake for her fans worldwide.
Serena won 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 against the world's number 2 player.
September 2, 2022. After leading both sets 5-3 and 4-0, Serena failed to advance past the third round.
Thanks, for the memories!
