Par ailleurs, une rumeur circule. Le roi Loui XVI refuserait de disperser les 20.000 soldats qui menacent d'intervenir contre l'Assemblée nationale.
Enfin, le 11 juillet le très populaire ministre Necker est renvoyé.
Dès le lendemain, les premières émeutes éclatent.
Le Couvent Salazar est pillé de son grain, des armes sont prises aux Invalides et aux Garde-meuble.
Pour contenir les insurgés, le roi mobilise des troupes autour de la ville et dans le même temps, une milice bourgeoise est constituée.
Le 14 juillet 1789, c'est l'insurrection.
La foule se presse devant la Bastille. Construite au XIVe siècle, cette forteresse est devenue prison d'Etat. Le roi peut par lettre de cachet, sans procès ni jugement y faire enfermer quelqu'un.
Pour le peuple français, marqué par l'esprit des Lumières, la Bastille est devenue un des symboles de l'arbitraire royal.
Leur idée n'était pas d'attaquer cette prison presque vide, mais d'exiger des armes et le retrait des canons pointés sur eux.

Charlie's Spirit...
In appearance, Charlie could not pass the beauty contest and judges of this world would not give him the time of day.
Nevertheless, Charlie was handsome. His beer-belly was about the size of a 9-month pregnant woman. Short and stalky, a nose that looks like Moe's and ten times more humorous. He really was...
Charlie's greenish eyes gave piercing looks through wrinkled eyelids and bushy eyebrows. Out of the unharmoniously contoured mouth, comes a soothing and thundering baritone voice. Need I tell you Charlie was handsome?
I met Charlie long ago but failed to tell the tale to anyone. As a young man, he boasts about marrying the only woman of his life. Charlie made no fuss about leaving her in Arizona. But, I could tell he missed her. Her smiling picture adorned the top of a steel cabinet Charlie used for table on his side of the room.
In 2004, Charlie and I were roommates, living out there in the desert. Our room was made out of a twenty-five foot, finished steel shipping container. Charlie worked with the Outside Plant crew, digging trenches, cabling, wiring closets, installing phones and Internet...
Charlie's cheerful demeanor earned him the salute "Here is, Charlie!" Indeed, Charlie was a star. In his early seventies, he was out there, living in a warzone, working and sending money to his wife in Arizona.
Come to think of it, by his actions, Charlie sets a very high standard for the rest of us. He never complained about hardship, the harsh living conditions. No time for that. Charlie was too busy working and enjoying life. And that was the Charlie Traynor spirit I wanted to tell you about today.
