Histoire Contemporaine...

(Au brouillon: Thèse Doctorale)

Beaubrun Ardouin avait raison de dire qu'il ne saurait prétendre écrire l'histoire d'Haïti. Malgré cet aveu, il publia ses onze volumes, qui sont devenus, sans conteste, les plus belles pages d'histoire de son pays. 

En écrivant, cette histoire contemporaine, je n'ai qu'un objectif, celui de faire jaillir la vérité. Mon but n'est pas non plus de flétrir la mémoire de qui que ce soit. Même si la lumière des événements aura prouvé qu’un tel ou telle personne cachait la vérité historique. 

Cela veut dire, en temps opportun, nous poserons des questions pertinentes, en vue de soustraire la déduction logique du mensonge.

Où Beaubrun Ardouin avait-il puisé ses connaissances ?

Il nous a dit, a priori, qu'il voulait écrire un livre sur la vie du Général Borgella; et que cette vie soit étroitement liée à l'histoire nationale. Beaubrun Ardouin dit qu'il a assisté au trépas du général.  Toutefois, connaissant mieux que personne nos moeurs et nos habitudes, l'auteur affirme plus tard qu'il se méfia des traditions orales de son temps. Notons que cela ne fut qu'une petite contradiction.

Le premier livre qu'il examina fut celui de Garran de Coulon, particulièrement son Rapport Sur la Colonie de Saint-Domingue. Quatre volumes, détaillant les différentes couches de la société coloniale. Beaubrun Ardouin parlera ensuite de l'Assemblée de St-Marc, ces proéminents fonctionnaires de l'Etat Français à Saint-Domingue, leur point de ralliement et leur différence, sur la promulgation de la Loi du 4 Avril 1791 dans la colonie.

Ensuite, Beaubrun Ardouin jeta un coup d'oeil sur l'oeuvre de quelques autres, de Pamphile de LaCroix,  Mémoire Pour Servir à la Révolution de Saint-Domingue, Thomas Madiou, Histoire d'Haiti. Nous croyons même qu'il s'était rendu en Angleterre pour consulter la Bibliothèque Royale, car il ne saurait parler avec assurance d'Henri Christophe, ni de la Dette de l'Indépendance sans puiser, au préalable, dans cette source d'information féconde.

Pour nous, nous ne saurons écrire l'histoire contemporaine d'Haïti sans faire un rappel sur la Révolution de 1946, la présidence de Dumarsais Estimé et le renversement de ce gouvernement le 10 mai 1950...On a droit de se demander s'il ne figurait pas sur la liste des Présidents de doublure ? Pour nous, en tout cas, son départ précipité le confirme. Malheureusement, les archives de notre temps font défaut, pour la simple raison, soit que le souverain les a détruits, ou qu'il utilisa quelques-uns de ses sbires dans ce même but. 

Qu'est-il arrivé ?

Après la chute du président Lescot, le pays cherchait à se redéfinir. Les élites du temps se mirent en branle pour s'assurer qu'un gouvernement aussi malhonnête ne puisse renaitre en s'emparant du pouvoir exécutif.

Tant sous la présidence d'Élie Lescot, que sous ses devanciers, le pays a connu, de manière abstraite ou illusoire, une sorte de stabilité politique. La censure a toujours existé dans notre coin du bassin de la Caraïbe, ce berceau de la liberté des Noirs. 

D'un autre côté, la présidence de doublure en a fait les dégâts que l'on sait.

Mais, auparavant, l'indépendance donna lieu presqu'immédiatement à la dictature militaire, puis civile.

Paroles.

Ce fut un grand bal, dans les ténèbres,

Que le service des pompes funèbres,

Organisait ce dimanche, au profit,

De l’Amicale des Croque-morts Réunis.

Ce soir-là, rentrant d’un enterrement,

Je m’y suis rendu avec les parents,

On a dansé toute la nuit et quand j’en suis sorti,

Y avait une ambiance du tonnerre,

A Classroom Experiment...

 

The movie is based on real life experiences at the Palo Alto High School in California on April 1967.

It was one of the most frightful classroom experiences I have ever had.

It all started when we were studying Nazi Germany.

The people selected for extermination by the Nazis were herded into concentration camps located all over Eastern Europe.

The life expectancy of prisoners in those camps was only 270 days.

They were worked, starved, tortured. And when they couldn't work anymore, they were exterminated in gas chambers. 

Their remains were disposed of in ovens.

In all, the Nazis exterminated over 10 million men, women and children in these concentration camps.

"It's incredible, the more they like you to make decisions for them..." "For the rest of your life, you will never let a group's will to assert your individual right."

On va faire un petit tour pour briser la monotonie...

Préparatifs:

Deux jours avant le départ, qu'il s'agisse d'une voiture de haute performance ou pas. Cela doit être la première chose à faire: 

Inspection et lubrification s'il y a lieu: 

Moteur, freins, pneus, pare-brise, vitre arrière, le plein d'essence. Ces frais peuvent coûter environ $600.

Simulation de route. On n'entreprend pas un voyage entr'Etat en voiture privée sans imaginer, au préalable, ce qui va se passer en cours de route. Voyager seul la nuit sur les autoroutes n'est pas recommandé aux débutants.

En ce qui concerne la nourriture: Thermos, fruits tranchés, eau potable, salade, sandwhich, un sachet de glace, sachets en plastique. 

En matière de sécurité, on aura besoin d'un: Flash, dépaneur de pneus, cable électrique, un gallon vide, Baton, Canif ou plus en cas d'accident, trousse de premiers secours. Voyager seul la nuit a ses inconvénients. On doit être vigilant. Ici, les imbéciles ne manquent pas sur les autoroutes...

Contemporary history with David Hoffman...

100 Frustrating years after the emancipation proclamation, the Negro Community has arrived to the decision to celebrate the centennial in an all out effort to achieve full rights now!

A live television show that was broadcast in 1963. It is more than 60 years old, and yet, I feel it is so relevant to some issues we face in the United States today.

It is also amazing because of the eloquence of these five American Black leaders who are about to discuss the State of the American Negro.

I am David Hoffman, film maker. I didn't shoot this. But, I was a college senior and I was watching the show on television with my parents, and what I saw so affected me and it made me decide to go down to Washington to attend the March on Washington that Summer.

It also got me to make my first documentary which is posted on my channel, from 1963 about migrant workers in Riverhead Long Island, near where I lived.

So look, before I run this amazing show, I got to tell you a little bit of background which I think will matter to you.

It was the Spring of 1963. President Kennedy is exciting the nation with a feeling of all kind of new things are going to happen, and America is going to be great. It's also 100 years after the Congress passed the Emancipation Proclamation, which free the slaves.

There was new and bold legislations before Congress. And it was exciting legislation, because it had to do with voting rights. Giving Negros, as the said at the time, the right to vote, and making certain that they could vote to support this legislation. The five major Negro organizations in America announced that they are going to have this march in Washington to support the legislation.

The issue of Civil Rights in America had been fomenting for several years. 1960-61, black students in the south began to protest by sitting in at lunch counters. Martin Luther King, in the late 1960s, had had his bus boycott, and the march in Birmingham, and other things were happening around the country that those of us in the North, like people like me, were watching, very sympathetic to what the students were trying to do: Get people to vote.

So National Educational Television, before we had PBS, decided to do this live show with five Negro leaders, the top guys, talking about what they hoped will happen at this march. It's prophetic! 

What they were saying 60 years ago is so relevant to what people are saying and thinking... and truly apply today.

There was Roy Wilkings, the head of the N.A.A.C.P

There was Whitney Young Jr, National Urban League

There was James Farmer, of the C.O.R.E - Congress on Racial Equality.

There was James Forman, the head of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, S.N.C.C, who had been training students in Mississippi to attempt to register voters.

I knew young people who attended the training sessions and went south, and I tought they were heroes. This was scary stuff. And there were the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. S.C.L.C

I used to be a runner in High School and College and in my late thirties I began to jogg. Early way of joggers is the most foolish thing I ever did. 

I was jogging near my house in Washington, I was the assistant attorney general of the United States. Best friend of the attorney general of the United States. I was jogging near my house...

And a police car came by - fortunately I had my Justice department in my hidden pocket.

-Boy ! I kept on jogging.

-Boy ! I was jogging... I keep on jogging.

-Hey, you boy! Spotlight on me...

-Spread your legs! I spread my legs, they hit me pretty hard between the legs and and hurt. And, I kept saying look in my back pocket. Reach in my back pocket.

-Boy, you robbed the store!

-Boy, you'd better stop! I think I'd better stop. And so, I stopped. And two white cops get out and slammed me against the wall.

-Boy, this, boy that, boy, boy, boy. and they pulled out this thing. It was a nice leather thing... it says Justice Department Official.

Ah, they melted.

-Oh, I was just like... he had a call and it was just like...it fits you to... ah, sir! Bla, bla, bla.

Yes, of course I called the police chief the minute I get home, and those guys were suspended and disciplined.

If I had had no credentials in my pocket, I would have been in jail that night.

Middle Class, 37-year old father of two children, doing nothing wrong but jogging. That's not the only time it happened to me. Well, if it would happen to me, imagine what would have happened to seventeen year old black kid in the inner city?...
